                                    THE SPHINX’S RIDDLE
Long long ago there was a city in Greece, called Thebes.Like many other cities in Greece, and like the cities in ancient China,Thebes was a little kingdom, and it’s king,Laius by name, ruled happily over its people.
But one day,a terrible monster appeared on one of the roads outside the city,It was called the Sphinx, and thought its head was like a woman’s,it had the body of a lion. The Sphinx had a riddle, which she asked everybody who passed her way,and anyone who could not answer the riddle, she would eat up alive.
No one was able to answer the riddle. Day after day, some brave citizens of the Thebes went out to meet the monster, but everyone of them was killed. The road was full of the dead bodies of men, and the people were very much afraid and didn’t know what to do.So King Laius said he would go to ask the gods in the next city, but he too was killed on his way by a stanger, and greater still was the people’s fear.
The riddle asked by the Sphinx was:“What creature walks upon four feet in the morning ,upon two at noon, and upon three in the evening?”
At last, the strange came to the city,Nobody knew who he was, nor did they know that he had killed the king. They only saw that he was a brave and good-looking young man. When he came to the city and heard the story of the Sphinx,he was greatly interested. He was so sure he could guess the riddle that he at once set out to find the Sphinx.
Bolddly he went along the road until he saw the Sphinx lying by the roadside.“Answer me this riddle if you wish to live,”said the Sphinx  smiling at him,for she was sure that nobody could answer the question, and that she would soon eat him up.And the Sphinx asked him the riddle.
After a moment’s thought ,this brave man answered that the creature was MAN.“For,” said he ,“in the morning of life, or in babyhood, man creeps on his hands and knees;at noon or in middle age,he walks on his legs;and at life’s sunset or in old age,he walks with a crutch(stick).”
At this the Sphinx’s face changed, for the answer to her riddle had been found. She was so angry with herself that she jumped over the rocks and killed herself.
The people of Thebes was so glad when they heard the news that they made the stranger their king, and called him King Edipus, for this was his name.
Now Edipus was really the son of King Laius, but the people of Thebes did not know it,nor did Edipus know it himself.People thought that he had died in his babyhood, but he had grown up in a neighbouring city as the son of the King Corinth. So he did not know that he had killed his own father.Only later on did he find that out,and he was so grieved that he went away and died in a forest.
